The chronological division into ‘the Soviet era’ and ‘afterwards’ is a device for conveying experiences and expectations, which in turn are informed not only by personal but also by political, social and economic crises. In historical studies and the social sciences, the use of the term ‘post-Soviet’ has long been a controversial issue.
